plum preserves

October 17th, 2010 by Lindsay

I’ve been following the ministry of food blog at the Imperial War Museum (& I got to see the show when I was in London). After a giant plum dump from our CSA fruit box, I made jam today. Canning and preserving seem like wartime activities, but nobody’s really doing stuff like that during this war. Food supplies aren’t such an issue when all the bases have Burger Kings.

It’s a beautiful color.

singing bowls

listened to the singing bowl composition at yerba buena.

birthday

October 14th, 2010 by Lindsay

ha ha ha, one of my packages took so long to arrive it was interpreted as an early birthday gift. oh well. Let’s see if that cake in a jar can really last a month!

K reports he has spent the last 3-4 birthdays in the same little room on the same base. Thinking good thoughts abt 2011–a different venue, at least–

desert in october

October 13th, 2010 by Lindsay

Unusually hot weather today, yesterday, day before–let’s call this a three day exercise in sweaty contemplation of deserts elsewhere.

October 11, 12, 13.

air show

October 10th, 2010 by Lindsay

was subjected to blue angels noise & lack of parking spaces in SF today, forfeiting a lovely lunch at Green’s and just a smidge of hearing health. Glad I don’t hear that super loud noise every day.

cake-in-jars finished

October 9th, 2010 by Lindsay

ready to go visit Beth & Annie and participate in art exhibits, and maybe even get eaten. Still no word from K if the carrot cake survived/was edible. His birthday is this week.

smaller jars seem prone to overflow!

rally at school

October 7th, 2010 by Lindsay

I used to go to anti-war protests but I can’t remember the last one—they don’t exist anymore. But should. Anyway, the war has certainly contributed to the budget crisis currently compromising the UC system.

Forgot my camera, but here is a picture from Occupy CA. Our rally was pretty small, really, but there was an amazing pie eating contest put on by the faculty, where pies represented the budget and contestants with names like “Executive Compensation” and “Yudof Housing Budget” gobbled everything up.

You can actually see me in the photo, sitting on the concrete divider closest to the main buildings wearing a grey jacket.

nothing!

October 6th, 2010 by Lindsay

such an uneventful day. may we all have peaceful days like this…

sick @ work

October 5th, 2010 by Lindsay

glad my job involves just standing around, talking, and listening. definitely could not have coped with some of the high stress work K has to do with worse colds than this.

planning purple jar cakes

October 4th, 2010 by Lindsay

decided to extend K’s cake-in-a-jar to Beth & Annie’s purple wedding. spent time compiling list of things i need. will be including lavender in the batter.

plane paintings

October 3rd, 2010 by Lindsay

jarred by disturbing add-art show this week! Planes crashing into my equilter order.

But the equilter order was lovely!

day of whispers

October 2nd, 2010 by Lindsay

Made it to the PO to send off cakes in jars, after perusing & rejecting the library’s 50 cent book sale selections. I was hoping to add some books to the box. Flat rate boxes are extra satisfying when they’re heavy with books.

No voice today; wrecked it lecturing for 4 hours in a row, or, have a cold. Jury is out.

cake in a jar: at last

I’m not sure my jars are sealing properly, but, worth a shot anyway! Behold, cake batter being mixed:

much employment in Doha

Marveled at all the jobs in Qatar right now, mostly here: http://www.qatar.vcu.edu/

aromatherapy projections

September 29th, 2010 by Lindsay

Spent the day blissed out on aura cacia’s “tranquility” blend, in my borrowed diffuser with trippy rainbow LED lights. Wish I could waft smells across the world.

still so incredibly hot

September 28th, 2010 by Lindsay

meditation on heat all day long. was sweating between my fingers walking around campus! Drove down a few hundred feet to sea level: -20 degrees, but hot again at home. Watered the suffering tree in our backyard, happy to see some green leaves emerging among the sad brown ones (the result of our last heat wave).

desert weather continues

September 27th, 2010 by Lindsay

Blown away by LA temperatures! The desert encroaches.

But also, much love for this sustainable desert city outside Abu Dhabi.

hot again; pressing cold things against self.

September 26th, 2010 by Lindsay

ice water against feet in this instance.

indoor desert day 2. still a few degrees cooler than qatar though.

desert indoors

September 25th, 2010 by Lindsay

really hot here today, heightened by S’s decision to fry a bunch of stuff (yummy stuff). Desertification of our kitchen was achieved for 2-3 hours last night.

email/dream overlap

September 24th, 2010 by Lindsay

woke up from a dream about K to an email from K sent during the dream. The dream was surreal and kind of disturbing, won’t detail it here, but, the email was normal and reassuring. K has spent the last three birthdays in the same room in the same building in the same base.

Also pondering my lack of pictures lately. that last post could have had some good shots, but for my lack of camera while xeroxing.

work

September 23rd, 2010 by Lindsay

first day of class today. spent some quality time with the photocopier, which always reminds me of when K & I developed a special new form of pilot chatter devoted to xeroxing. I don’t even remember the jokes now, but I can’t make copies without thinking of him.

went through two reams of paper and even replaced the staples myself!

noisy plane

September 22nd, 2010 by Lindsay

a low flying plane passed over us twice late last night. both times we went outside to look at it. A clear view of all those tiny lights underneath, and an alarming reminder of how loud planes can be!

made contact

September 21st, 2010 by Lindsay

My mom reminded me we hadn’t had news from K for a while. That’s normal, he’s busy, but I sent off an email anyway. Also fished for birthday requests.

Getting psyched up for cake in a jar.

freshman observation

September 20th, 2010 by Lindsay

During a quick errand on campus, I couldn’t believe how young the students looked. Imagined myself, and K, at that age, wondered if he already wanted to fly.

war art breakfast

September 19th, 2010 by Lindsay

had breakfast with two art friends, one of whom does game/immersive/performance art related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I need to get busy and write up an article about a panel we did together a few years ago.

Breakfast was amazing and decadent: croissant french toast and a scrambled egg.

phone dream

September 18th, 2010 by Lindsay

had a dream this morning about a long phone call w/ K, who said he had all this spare time and was just calling people to fill it.

wish that were true!

saw a leafy bike & thought about camoflage

Also of note, more aerospace related, is the zipline at the airport: http://01sj.org/2010/artworks/xairport/

made apple juice

September 16th, 2010 by Lindsay

This is the kind of thing I wish I could send overseas. Both the tree and the jar.

fed watermelon to Irene

September 15th, 2010 by Lindsay

My hospice client today managed to eat 4-5 bites of watermelon. While feeding her, I wondered about fruits in the Middle East again (dates are big, I guess) and mortality in general.
